VisitGovernor Hochul to Deploy NYPD Officers on NYC Overnight Subway Trains for Six Months, Enhancing Safety Measures
Jan 14, 2025, 07:47 PM
New York Governor Kathy Hochul has announced a new subway safety initiative, which includes deploying NYPD officers on every overnight subway train in New York City for the next six months. The plan, which will see two officers per train, aims to enhance security following recent violent incidents in the subway system. Hochul stated that the state will financially support the effort, emphasizing the presence of uniformed police not only on platforms but also on trains from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Additionally, Hochul plans to install safety barriers at 100 more stations, upgrade to brighter LED lighting at every subway station by the end of the year, and introduce new turnstiles to prevent fare evasion. This initiative follows a period where overall subway crime decreased, yet felony assaults have risen, prompting concerns about safety among riders.
