VisitGov. Hochul Signs Bills at Midtown Office to Enhance E-Bike Battery Safety After 18 Deaths
Jul 11, 2024, 07:21 PM
Governor Kathy Hochul signed a series of bills on Thursday at her Midtown office aimed at enhancing safety standards for e-bikes, e-scooters, and mopeds in New York. The legislation focuses on the manufacturing, sale, storage, and charging of lithium-ion batteries, which have been linked to deadly fires. Hochul highlighted the importance of these measures, noting that public education efforts have already reduced fatalities from battery explosions, with only one death reported this year compared to 13 at the same time last year. The new laws are designed to prevent incidents like the battery fires that have damaged numerous delivery vehicles and resulted in 18 deaths in New York City. The event was attended by fellow Democratic officials, and Doug Williams provided more details on the legislation.
