Google Maps to Show 'Gulf of America' and 'Mount McKinley' After Trump Orders
Jan 28, 2025, 10:50 AM
Google has announced that it will change the names of the Gulf of Mexico and Denali in its Maps application for users in the United States, following executive orders from President Donald Trump. The Gulf of Mexico will be renamed as the Gulf of America, and Denali will revert to its former name, Mount McKinley, once the changes are officially updated in the US Geographic Names Information System (GNIS). Google stated in a post on X (formerly Twitter) that users outside the United States and Mexico will see both names displayed, with the original names listed first, while in Mexico, the name 'Gulf of Mexico' will remain unchanged. These updates will appear on Google Maps after official government sources are updated, reflecting President Trump's directives to restore traditional names to significant geographic landmarks.
