VisitGoogle DeepMind's GenCast AI Model Delivers 15-Day Forecasts in 8 Minutes
Dec 4, 2024, 05:05 PM
Google DeepMind has introduced GenCast, a new AI weather model that significantly enhances the accuracy of weather forecasting. This model, detailed in a paper published in Nature, can predict weather conditions up to 15 days ahead with state-of-the-art accuracy, surpassing traditional methods in both everyday and extreme weather event predictions. GenCast was trained on four decades of historical data and can deliver forecasts in just 8 minutes, a stark contrast to the hours required by supercomputers. The model outperforms the world's best predictions, including those from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) ensemble system, and has been made open source, allowing researchers and environmentalists to leverage its capabilities for further advancements in Earth science applications.
