Germany Urges EU to Ease Sanctions on Syria's New Leadership Post-Assad

Germany is advocating for the European Union to ease sanctions on Syria, according to reports from the Financial Times and Reuters. The proposal, circulated by German officials before Christmas, suggests a gradual lifting of restrictions on Damascus in exchange for progress on social issues, including the protection of minorities and women's rights. This push comes as Western countries seek to establish relations with Syria's new leadership following the ousting of Bashar al-Assad last month. German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock visited Syria earlier this month, meeting with the new leader, Ahmed Al Sara, to discuss the country's transition and the involvement of all social groups in the process.
