VisitGermany's Defense Minister Pistorus Announces New Voluntary Military Service Amid Russia Tensions
Jun 12, 2024, 04:37 PM
Germany's Defense Ministry, led by Defense Minister Boris Pistorus, has announced a series of proposals to address the significant shortage of military personnel. The plans include the introduction of a new voluntary military service, which aims to bolster the country's defense capabilities amid rising tensions with Russia. The initiative follows Germany's suspension of conscription 13 years ago. As part of the new measures, all men will be required to complete a questionnaire at age 18 to assess their suitability and interest in military service, while the questionnaire will be optional for women. The proposals are also part of a broader effort to expand the military in response to Russia’s ongoing war on Ukraine. However, budget infighting poses a threat to these defense commitments. According to Spiegel, Germany aims to be 'war ready' with these new measures.
