VisitGerman Army Withdraws from Niger, Ends Sahel Presence
Aug 30, 2024, 11:10 PM
The German army has completed its withdrawal from Niger, vacating an airbase in the junta-run Sahel nation. This marks the end of the Bundeswehr's presence in Africa's Sahel region. On August 30, Niger's chief of land forces, Mamane Sani Kiau, and German Colonel Karsten Struss signed an agreement to hand over the 101st Air Base in Niamey to Niger's armed forces. The withdrawal involved five transport planes carrying 60 Bundeswehr personnel and 146 tons of cargo.
