George Helmy has been sworn in as the new United States Senator from New Jersey, succeeding Bob Menendez who resigned in August following his conviction. The swearing-in ceremony was conducted by Senate President Pro Tempore Patty Murray on September 9 in the afternoon. Helmy's appointment restores the Democratic majority in the Senate to 51-49. Helmy, who has a long career dedicated to serving the people of New Jersey, is the first Coptic member of the Senate. Fellow senators and representatives have expressed their eagerness to work with him on advancing the Democratic agenda and addressing issues important to New Jersey families.
