The incident occurred on Saturday morning when the tanker overturned and spilled petrol, which subsequently exploded. The explosion took place in the Dikko area of Niger State, near Abuja, the nation's capital, specifically at Dikko Junction along Minna road. Eyewitnesses reported that people were attempting to scoop fuel from the crashed tanker when the explosion happened, leading to a high number of casualties and injuries, including a pregnant woman and her children. Firefighters were still battling the fire at the time of the reports.
