VisitFSOCIETY Claims Hack on Bitfinex; CTO Denies Breach, Cites Data Discrepancies
May 5, 2024, 05:43 AM
The hacking group FSOCIETY recently claimed responsibility for cyberattacks on several entities, including the cryptocurrency exchange Bitfinex and Rutgers University. FSOCIETY alleges to have breached Bitfinex's security measures, asserting that they accessed personal data of 400,000 customers. However, Bitfinex's Chief Technology Officer, Paolo Ardoino, has strongly denied these claims, stating that the exchange does not store passwords or two-factor authentication secrets in plaintext. Ardoino also highlighted discrepancies in the leaked data, noting that out of 22,500 alleged customer records, only 5,000 corresponded to actual users. This has raised suspicions about the authenticity of the data, suggesting it might be compiled from different sources rather than a direct breach.
