Up to 600 people were shot dead within hours by al-Qaeda-linked militants in an August attack on the town of Barsalogho in Burkina Faso, according to a French government security assessment cited by CNN. The new death toll nearly doubles previous estimates of around 300, marking one of the worst terrorist attacks in history. The assault was carried out by al-Qaeda affiliate Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM), highlighting the rapidly growing threat of militant activity in West Africa.
