VisitFranklin Fire in Malibu Consumes 1,674 Acres; Flames Near Malibu Pier, Pepperdine University
Dec 10, 2024, 09:59 AM
A fast-moving wildfire dubbed the Franklin Fire broke out late Monday night in Malibu, California, rapidly spreading amid strong Santa Ana winds and forcing mandatory evacuations. The fire, first reported near Malibu Canyon Road and Francisco Ranch Road, quickly grew from 10 acres to over 1,674 acres within hours, fueled by wind gusts up to 65 mph. Evacuation orders have been issued for areas east of Malibu Canyon Road and south of Piuma Road, including the Serra Retreat area and Malibu Colony, where some structures have been consumed by flames. Flames have jumped Pacific Coast Highway and are nearing the Malibu Pier. The Los Angeles County Fire Department has dispatched a massive ground and air response, with helicopters and firefighters battling the blaze under Red Flag conditions. Pepperdine University, located near the fire zone, has activated a shelter-in-place order for students and staff and canceled all classes and final exams on Tuesday. Students have posted videos showing flames approaching the campus. No injuries have been reported.
