VisitFrance Urged to Act as Writer Boualem Sansal Missing After Arrest in Algeria
Nov 21, 2024, 11:49 AM
French-Algerian writer Boualem Sansal has reportedly been arrested upon his arrival from Paris at Algiers airport on November 16 and has not been heard from since. Concerns are mounting among his colleagues, publishers, and French officials who fear he has been detained by the Algerian authorities. Sansal, known for his criticism of Islamism and the Algerian regime, has been censored in Algeria for his writings. He is the author of '2084: The End of the World' and is a member of the strategic committee of Frontières. Sansal had recently been naturalized as a French citizen. French politicians, including David Lisnard and Eric Zemmour, are calling on the French government and the European Union to seek his immediate release and apply diplomatic pressure on Algeria.
