Former Senator 'Biu' de Lira, Re-elected Mayor and Father of Arthur Lira, Dies at 82

Former Brazilian Senator Benedito de Lira, also known as Biu de Lira, father of the President of the Chamber of Deputies Arthur Lira, has died at the age of 82. Benedito de Lira was the re-elected mayor of Barra de São Miguel in Alagoas and had a long political career, which began with the ARENA party. He passed away on January 14, 2025, in Maceió, after battling cancer and undergoing surgery on December 31. He did not attend his own inauguration due to his health issues. The government of Alagoas has declared three days of official mourning in his honor. Arthur Lira mourned his father, calling him 'my reference, my hero.'
