VisitFormer Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori, Convicted for Human Rights Abuses, Dies at 86
Sep 11, 2024, 11:57 PM
Alberto Fujimori, the former president of Peru, has died at the age of 86. Fujimori, who served as president from 1990 to 2000, was known for steering economic growth and taming hyperinflation in the 1990s. However, his tenure was marred by human rights abuses, including his conviction for the killing of 25 people in two massacres in 1991 and 1992, and corruption. Fujimori was sentenced to 25 years in prison in 2009 but was released in December 2023 on a humanitarian pardon. He also led a bloody war against Maoist rebels. His daughter, Keiko Fujimori, confirmed his death. Fujimori, of Japanese descent, had a long battle with cancer. He had intended to run for presidency again in 2026.
