VisitFive Years Since U.S. Forces Killed ISIS Leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi in Syria Raid
Oct 28, 2024, 12:19 AM
Today marks five years since ISIS caliph Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi was killed during a U.S. raid in Syria's Idlib province. On October 26, 2019, U.S. forces, including Delta Force and the 75th Ranger Regiment, conducted the operation in the village of Barisha near the Turkish border. The raid was supported by elite Night Stalker pilots. Then-President Donald Trump tweeted just before 930pm ET that 'Something very big has just happened.' He later announced the successful mission, famously stating that al-Baghdadi 'died like a dog' in one of the hardest speeches by a U.S. president. The operation also highlighted the role of Conan, the Belgian Malinois, who was involved in the raid and passed away last year.
