VisitFIU Names Willie Simmons Head Coach After 12-1 Season at FAMU
Dec 7, 2024, 03:47 PM
Florida International University (FIU) has officially hired Willie Simmons as its new head football coach on a four-year deal. Simmons was the running backs coach at Duke University prior to this appointment. Before his tenure at Duke, he served as head coach at Florida A&M University (FAMU) from 2018 to 2023, achieving a 45-13 overall record, including a standout 12-1 season in 2023. Simmons also previously led Prairie View A&M as head coach. Expressing his enthusiasm, Simmons stated, "Words cannot express how excited I am to lead FIU football into the future!" FIU Athletic Director Scott Carr described Simmons as the ideal candidate to lead the program. Simmons replaces former head coach Mike MacIntyre, who was dismissed last weekend after three consecutive 4-8 seasons.
