Health officials have confirmed the first known U.S. case of a new, more severe strain of mpox, identified as clade I, in California on November 16, 2024. The patient, who recently traveled from Eastern Africa, is currently in San Mateo County, part of the Bay Area. This strain, previously seen in eastern Congo, has been spreading in Central and Eastern Africa. California health officials and the CDC are awaiting further testing to understand more about this case. There is no evidence of local spread at this time.
