VisitFirefighters Battle Wildfires Near Athens, Evacuations Ordered as Flames Reach Residential Areas
Aug 11, 2024, 05:29 PM
Firefighters in Greece are battling to contain two wildfires near Athens. The fires have forced evacuations, although no injuries have been reported so far. Greece's Fire Brigade has been dealing with dozens of wildfire fronts daily over the past few weeks, with more than 40 blazes breaking out across the country. The situation has led to large parts of the country being placed on a state of red alert. The wildfires have reached residential areas, including Varnavas in Attica, prompting officials to advise residents to stay indoors with windows shut. The blazes have been exacerbated by a persistent heatwave, darkening the skies over Athens.
