Jan 17, 2025, 03:38 AM
A fire erupted shortly after 3 p.m. on Thursday at Vistra's Moss Landing Power Plant in California, involving a lithium battery storage facility and prompting evacuation orders and road closures. The Monterey County Sheriff's Office issued evacuation orders for areas near Elkhorn Slough, specifically Zones MRY-B047 and MRY-B053. Residents have been advised to close windows and doors, turn off air systems, and evacuate due to concerns about toxic smoke. Highway 1 has been closed in both directions. Fire crews are on the scene battling the blaze amid light winds, which are expected to remain through the night. The smoke is currently around 750 feet and above. The Castroville Recreation Center at 11261 Crane St. is serving as a temporary evacuation point. Representative Jimmy Panetta stated that authorities are monitoring the situation and are in contact with first responders.
