The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has finalized a new rule updating the definition of the term 'healthy' for food labeling, marking the first significant change in 30 years. The revised definition allows a broader range of foods, including higher fat fish, nuts, seeds, and certain oils, to be classified as healthy, while items like white bread will no longer qualify. The FDA's decision is intended to help combat diet-related chronic diseases and encourage healthier dietary choices among consumers. The new labeling rules are set to take effect at the end of February 2025.
