VisitFDA Finds Millions of Bacteria in Tattoo and Makeup Inks

New research conducted by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has revealed that many sealed bottles of tattoo and permanent makeup ink, including some marked as sterile, are contaminated with potentially dangerous bacteria. The study tested 75 unopened and sealed ink bottles from 14 different manufacturers and found that about 35% of the products contained millions of bacteria. Investigators warned that the inks were contaminated with both aerobic and anaerobic bacteria, including possibly pathogenic microorganisms.
