VisitFBI Probes New Orleans Attacker Shamsud-Din Jabbar's Trips to Egypt and Canada
Jan 6, 2025, 04:13 PM
Shamsud-Din Jabbar, the suspect in the deadly New Year's Day truck attack in New Orleans, had visited the city twice before the incident, according to the FBI. The 42-year-old former U.S. Army soldier used Meta smart glasses to record video while cycling through the French Quarter in October, scouting the area ahead of the attack. The attack resulted in 14 deaths and dozens of injuries when Jabbar drove a truck into a crowd on Bourbon Street and opened fire, before being killed in a shootout with police. Jabbar also traveled to Cairo, Egypt, and Ontario, Canada, in the summer of 2023, though it remains unclear if these trips were connected to the attack. The FBI is investigating potential ties between these international travels and the New Orleans attack. Authorities believe Jabbar acted alone.
