VisitEx-President Mahama of NDC Wins Ghana Election as Vice President Bawumia Concedes Amid Economic Crisis
Dec 7, 2024, 08:09 PM
John Mahama, the former president of Ghana and leader of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has won the 2024 presidential election, defeating Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP). Bawumia conceded defeat on December 8, stating, "The people of Ghana have spoken, the people have voted for change at this time and we respect it with all humility." The election, held on December 7, was conducted peacefully amid the country's worst economic crisis in decades, characterized by high inflation and a debt crisis. Nearly 19 million registered voters participated in the polls to elect a new president and 276 parliamentarians. The NDC also secured a majority in the parliamentary elections. Ghana, the world's second-largest cocoa producer and a significant gold miner, faces economic challenges that Mahama has pledged to address. His campaign focused on tackling economic hardships, unemployment, and governance issues attributed to the previous administration.
