European Parliament Awards Sakharov Prize to Venezuelan Opposition Leaders Edmundo González Urrutia and María Corina Machado

Edmundo González Urrutia, the Venezuelan opposition leader, and María Corina Machado, another prominent opposition figure, have been awarded the 2024 Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Conscience by the European Parliament in Strasbourg, France. The ceremony took place where González presented electoral records claiming his victory in the Venezuelan presidential elections of July 28, 2024, which he alleges were not recognized by the Maduro regime. González's daughter, Ana Corina Sosa, accepted the award on behalf of Machado. During the event, González emphasized the significance of the prize as a symbol of unity among democrats worldwide and reiterated his commitment to ensuring the will of the Venezuelan people is respected. Machado, via video link, expressed that the award is a recognition of the struggle of the Venezuelan people for freedom and democracy.
