VisitEU Warns Apple to Open iPhone OS or Face Fines Up to 10% of Global Revenue
Sep 19, 2024, 09:46 AM
The European Union (EU) has issued a warning to Apple, mandating that the company open its iPhone operating system (iOS) to rival technologies. This directive is part of the new Digital Markets Act (DMA), which aims to ensure interoperability and fair competition within the tech industry. Apple must comply with these rules or face significant fines, potentially up to 10% of its global annual turnover. The EU Commission has started proceedings to specify Apple's interoperability obligations, requiring the company to provide free and effective interoperability with hardware and software features controlled by its iOS and iPadOS operating systems. Apple has been given six months to comply with these new regulations. EU antitrust regulators also require Apple to respond to interoperability requests from developers and third parties.
