VisitEU Targets Temu, Shein, AliExpress, and Alibaba with Import Duties and DSA Scrutiny
Jul 3, 2024, 05:05 AM
The European Union is intensifying its scrutiny of Chinese e-commerce platforms Temu and Shein over compliance with the Digital Services Act (DSA). In addition, the EU is proposing to impose import duties on cheap goods bought from these platforms, as well as from AliExpress and Alibaba, aiming to address concerns about the influx of low-cost and potentially dangerous products. This proposal includes scrapping the €150 threshold below which goods are exempt from customs duties. The increased activity of Temu and Shein in the air cargo market is also driving up freight rates and raising fears of a capacity squeeze later this year.
