VisitEU Court Orders Hungary to Pay €200 Million Fine and €1 Million Daily Over Asylum Policy
Jun 13, 2024, 10:03 AM
The European Court of Justice has ordered Hungary to pay a lump sum fine of 200 million euros for failing to comply with the bloc's asylum rules. Additionally, Hungary is required to pay a daily fine of 1 million euros until it fully implements the necessary measures in its migration policy as requested by a 2020 ruling. The fines, totaling $216 million, come as a result of Hungary's refusal to accept migrants at its borders and its illegal deportation of migrants, which the EU court deemed a serious infringement of migration rules.
