VisitEU Accuses Apple of Breaching Digital Markets Act with App Store Policies, Launches Investigation
Jun 24, 2024, 09:00 AM
The European Union has accused Apple of breaching the bloc's Digital Markets Act (DMA) with its App Store policies. EU regulators allege that Apple's rules prevent app developers from steering consumers to alternative offers, which violates the new digital-competition law. The European Commission has launched an investigation into Apple's contractual requirements for third-party app developers and app stores. Preliminary findings suggest that Apple's anti-steering rules and developer fees may be in breach of EU regulations. This investigation follows a €1.8 billion penalty imposed on Apple by EU antitrust watchdogs earlier this year for similar violations. The charges were announced on Monday and could result in a hefty fine for the iPhone maker.
