Dec 18, 2024, 04:41 PM
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has emphasized the need for international cooperation in the reconstruction and stabilization of Syria following the recent ousting of President Bashar al-Assad by opposition forces led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham after 13 years of conflict. In discussions with French President Emmanuel Macron, Erdogan welcomed France's decision to reopen its embassy in Damascus, viewing it as a step toward renewed international engagement in the region. Erdogan stressed the importance of preserving Syria's territorial integrity and sovereignty, and highlighted the necessity of creating sustainable conditions for the return of Syrian refugees. He also met with Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati, where both leaders agreed on the need for Turkey and Lebanon to act together to support Syria's stability, noting that Syria's stability is crucial for the region's overall peace. Erdogan reiterated Turkey's commitment to stand by the Syrian people and to contribute to the country's reconstruction, urging global partners to support these efforts. The European Union has pledged an additional 1 billion euros to aid Turkey in caring for the over 3 million Syrian refugees it hosts, with the aim to support their potential return to a stable Syria.
