VisitEpic Games Fined €1.125M by Dutch Authority for Unfair Practices Aimed at Children in Fortnite
May 14, 2024, 04:19 PM
The Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets has fined Epic Games €1.125 million for using unfair commercial practices aimed at children in Fortnite. The fine was imposed due to deceptive design and direct marketing tactics, including 'Get it Now' shop tags and countdown timers, which pressured children to make purchases quickly. Epic Games plans to appeal the decision, citing significant factual errors. As a response, Epic Games will implement changes in Fortnite's shop for players under 18 in the Netherlands, ensuring offers stay for at least 48 hours. The changes are demanded to be implemented by June 10.
