EEE Virus Resurfaces in US, Claims Life in New Hampshire; West Nile Activity Detected

The Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) virus, a rare but deadly mosquito-borne disease, has resurfaced in the United States, prompting public health warnings and preventive measures. Massachusetts has reported its first human case since 2020, and spraying efforts are underway to control the spread. A New Hampshire man, identified as Steven Perry, died from the virus on August 19, marking the first fatal case in New Hampshire since 2014. Health officials are on high alert, with Massachusetts and New Hampshire implementing measures such as closing parks from dusk to dawn and conducting aerial spraying to curb the spread. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has noted three human cases of EEE this year across Massachusetts, New Jersey, and Vermont. Additionally, West Nile virus activity has been detected in multiple states, including Maryland, where the first human case of the year was confirmed, and Philadelphia. Public health officials are emphasizing the importance of preventive measures, such as using insect repellent and limiting outdoor activities during peak mosquito hours.
