VisitEagles Legend Bill Bergey Dies at 79 After Three-Year Cancer Battle Announced on Christmas Morning

Philadelphia Eagles Hall of Fame linebacker Bill Bergey has passed away at the age of 79 following a three-year battle with cancer. Bergey, who played for the Eagles from 1974 to 1980, was a five-time Pro Bowler, two-time first-team All-Pro, and three-time second-team All-Pro. He was instrumental in leading the Eagles to their first Super Bowl appearance in 1981, though they lost to the Raiders in Super Bowl XV. Bergey began his NFL career with the Cincinnati Bengals in 1969, earning AFL Defensive Rookie of the Year honors and a Pro Bowl selection. Over his 12-season career, Bergey recorded 27 interceptions, 18.5 sacks, and 21 fumble recoveries, including an NFL-high six fumble recoveries in 1975. He was inducted into the Eagles Hall of Fame in 2009. Bergey’s death was announced by his son, Jake Bergey, a former professional lacrosse player, on social media Christmas morning. Jake described him as an exceptional father, friend, and athlete. Bergey had been battling jaw cancer since 2021 and had undergone multiple treatments. He was remembered for his toughness on the field and his kindness off it.
