VisitDow Jones and New York Post Sue Jeff Bezos-Backed Perplexity AI for Massive Copyright Infringement
Oct 21, 2024, 06:06 PM
Dow Jones & Company, the parent of The Wall Street Journal, and the New York Post have filed a lawsuit against AI startup Perplexity AI on Monday, alleging massive copyright infringement. The lawsuit claims that Perplexity AI's generative AI search engine engages in unauthorized copying of their copyrighted content without permission and accuses the startup of creating a 'content kleptocracy.' The media conglomerate, owned by Rupert Murdoch's News Corp, also alleges that Perplexity AI hallucinates fake news and attributes it to real publications. Despite a letter sent in July 2024 regarding copyright issues, Perplexity AI has not responded. Perplexity, backed by Jeff Bezos, is accused of infringing on their intellectual property. This legal action highlights the growing tension between traditional media outlets and AI companies over the use of copyrighted material.
