Jan 16, 2025, 02:47 PM
Brazoria County Sheriff's Deputy Jesus "Jesse" Vargas was fatally shot on Wednesday while serving a warrant in southwest Houston as part of the U.S. Marshals Gulf Coast Violent Offenders Task Force. The 17-year veteran was attempting to arrest Sean Christopher Davis, a repeat violent offender, when he was shot. Vargas is survived by his wife and three children. Following an hours-long manhunt, authorities located Davis hiding in a dumpster near the original shooting scene. U.S. Marshals K-9 Rocky, a 1.5-year-old Belgian Malinois, discovered Davis's location but was shot twice by the suspect. Law enforcement officers returned fire, killing Davis. Rocky was airlifted to a veterinary hospital, where his handler remained by his side. The K-9 is expected to recover and return to duty.
