Aug 17, 2024, 10:17 AM
The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the mpox outbreak a public health emergency of international concern, following the spread of a new, more dangerous strain of the virus, known as clade 1b, which carries a 5% mortality rate. This variant has been reported in several countries, including Sweden and Pakistan, after originating in Africa. The Democratic Republic of Congo is experiencing a severe outbreak, with over 15,600 reported cases and 537 deaths. More than 18,700 cases have been detected across Africa since January. European health officials are on high alert, with the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control recommending vaccinations for travelers. The WHO is urging vaccine manufacturers to increase production to curb the virus's spread.
