VisitDayton Billionaire Larry Connor Plans $20M Sub Dive to Titanic Site to Prove Safety After OceanGate Tragedy
May 28, 2024, 04:35 PM
Nearly a year after the OceanGate submersible tragedy that resulted in the deaths of five passengers, Ohio billionaire Larry Connor plans to take a $20 million submersible to the Titanic wreck site. Connor, a real estate investor from Dayton, aims to demonstrate that the deep-sea exploration industry is now safer. He will be accompanied by Patrick Lahey, CEO of Triton Submarines. Connor's submersible, named Triton 4000/2 Abyssal Explorer, will descend nearly 4 kilometers to the North Atlantic Ocean floor, where the Titanic rests. Connor referred to the Titan submersible involved in the OceanGate incident as a 'contraption.' This mission comes in response to the OceanGate incident, which raised significant safety concerns within the industry.
