VisitDaniel Silveira Re-Arrested by Order of Alexandre de Moraes for Curfew Violation
Dec 24, 2024, 11:57 AM
Former Brazilian federal deputy Daniel Silveira was arrested again by the Federal Police in Petrópolis, Rio de Janeiro, on Tuesday, December 24, 2024, following an order from Supreme Federal Court (STF) Minister Alexandre de Moraes. Silveira had been granted conditional release on the previous Friday but was re-arrested for failing to comply with the judicial conditions of his release. Specifically, he violated the curfew requirement by returning home at 2:10 a.m. on Sunday, December 22, well past the mandated 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. home confinement period. His defense argued that he had to visit a hospital due to severe back pain, but Moraes noted that the hospital discharge occurred at 00:34 a.m., and Silveira did not return home until over an hour and a half later. Among the conditions of his release, Silveira was required to wear an electronic ankle monitor and was prohibited from using social media or contacting former President Jair Bolsonaro. Silveira was previously convicted by the STF in 2022 to eight years and nine months in prison for inciting anti-democratic acts and attacking the court's ministers and institutions.
