VisitDabo Swinney Decides Wes Goodwin Will Not Return as Clemson's Defensive Coordinator After 2024 Struggles
Jan 6, 2025, 02:22 PM
Clemson University has announced that Wes Goodwin will not return as the team's defensive coordinator for the 2025 season. Head Coach Dabo Swinney made the decision after meeting with Goodwin on Sunday evening, citing the need for a change in the defensive coordinator position. Goodwin, who had served as the defensive coordinator since December 2021, was thanked for his character, commitment, and dedication to the program. Swinney expressed gratitude for Goodwin's contributions over the past 13 years and wished him well in his future endeavors. The search for a new defensive coordinator will begin immediately, with Swinney hoping to have a replacement named by the end of January or sooner. The move comes after Clemson's defense struggled in the 2024 season, particularly against the run, finishing 69th nationally in total defense and 84th in rush defense. Goodwin is owed a buyout of about $3.2 million, subject to mitigation.
