VisitCorral Fire Near Tracy Expands to 9,000 Acres, Closes I-580, Evacuations Ordered
Jun 2, 2024, 02:32 AM
The Corral Fire in San Joaquin County, near Tracy, has rapidly expanded to nearly 9,000 acres with only 10% containment, according to Cal Fire. Initially reported at 946 acres on Saturday afternoon, the fire has grown significantly due to strong winds, gusting up to 43 mph. The wind-driven fire has crossed Interstate 580, leading to its closure in both directions, along with Interstate 5, due to heavy smoke and zero visibility. Residents around Highway 580 between Corral Hollow Road and South Tracy Boulevard have been ordered to evacuate. The fire is burning near the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory Site 300, and efforts to contain it involve multiple agencies, including Cal Fire and Alameda County Fire, in a Unified Command. Air crews are on the scene, and two strike teams of type 1 engines have been requested for structure protection.
