VisitConnecticut Flash Floods: 1,000-Year Rain Event Kills Two, State of Emergency Declared
Aug 19, 2024, 11:41 AM
Connecticut experienced catastrophic flash flooding over the weekend, resulting in at least two deaths and over 100 rescues. The flooding, described as a '1,000-year' event, was triggered by torrential rains that dumped up to 17 inches in some areas. The severe weather caused mudslides, washed-out roads, and bridge collapses, particularly affecting New Haven and Fairfield counties. In Oxford, 19 people and a dog were rescued from floodwaters, while two individuals went missing after being swept away. The state of emergency was declared as urban search and rescue teams were deployed to assist affected areas. In Southbury, a man with a prosthetic leg and his dog were saved from a submerged vehicle at Southbury Plaza. Additionally, the dam at Putnam Park was breached, and a gas leak occurred in Oxford.
