VisitCongo's M23 Rebels Generate $300,000 (Ksh.38M) Monthly from Seized Mining Area, UN Reports
Oct 1, 2024, 08:23 AM
The United Nations has reported that the M23 rebel group, backed by Rwanda, is generating approximately $300,000 (Ksh.38M) monthly from a seized mining area in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. The head of the UN mission in Congo noted that as profits from mining have surged, armed groups have become militarized entrepreneurs. The UN Security Council heard that this substantial income highlights the ongoing conflict and exploitation of natural resources in the region.
