VisitColombia and Spain Recognize Edmundo González as Venezuela's President Amid July 28 Election Coercion Controversy
Sep 18, 2024, 05:25 PM
The plenary session of the Colombian Chamber approved a proposal for President Gustavo Petro to recognize Edmundo González as the elected president of Venezuela and reject the alleged fraud of Nicolás Maduro. This follows Spain's Senate and Congress formally recognizing González as the legitimate president of Venezuela, which has led to calls from the Venezuelan National Assembly for President Maduro's government to evaluate the rupture of relations with Spain. A standing ovation occurred in the Spanish Senate as a large majority voted in favor of recognizing González. Meanwhile, González has admitted to signing a pledge to abide by a recent Venezuelan Supreme Court ruling in favor of Maduro, claiming he was coerced into signing the document under threat after the July 28 election.
