Climeworks has inaugurated the world's largest direct air capture facility in Hellisheiði, Iceland, named Mammoth. This plant is designed to extract 36,000 tons of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere annually, aiming to address climate change by removing planet-heating pollution. However, there is controversy surrounding the cost-effectiveness of this technology. It reportedly costs $1,000 per ton to remove CO2 at this facility, compared to other services like TerraPass, which offer carbon removal at $6.25 per ton.
