VisitCivil Liberties Groups Sue Louisiana Over Ten Commandments Law Signed by Governor Jeff Landry
Jun 24, 2024, 08:11 PM
Civil liberties groups have filed a lawsuit Monday challenging Louisiana's new law that mandates the display of the Ten Commandments in all public school classrooms. The law, signed by Governor Jeff Landry, is set to take effect in 2025. The plaintiffs, which include parents and civil rights organizations, argue that the law violates the First Amendment by pressuring students into religious observance. The lawsuit claims that the statute infringes on constitutional rights to religious liberty. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) is among the groups representing the plaintiffs in this legal challenge. The law requires a state-approved version of the Ten Commandments to be displayed.
