China has launched extensive military drills around Taiwan, escalating tensions in the region. The exercises, known as 'Joint Sword-2024B,' involve the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) Navy, Air Force, and Rocket Force, and include activities such as sea-air combat-readiness patrols, blockades on key ports and areas, and strikes on maritime and ground targets. The drills are seen as a direct response to Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te's recent National Day speech, which emphasized Taiwan's independence. Taiwan's Defense Ministry has condemned the exercises as provocative and has placed its forces on heightened alert, particularly around the Bashi Channel. The Liaoning aircraft carrier is leading the naval operations. The PLA Eastern Theater Command is overseeing the drills, which began on October 14. The United States has also expressed concern, urging China to avoid actions that could destabilize the region. Taiwan has vowed to maintain the status quo.
