China's DeepSeek AI, Developed in Two Months, Tops Apple's App Store Over ChatGPT
Jan 27, 2025, 12:43 PM
Chinese AI startup DeepSeek has overtaken OpenAI's ChatGPT to become the top free app on Apple's App Store in the United States and China as of Monday. Developed by Hangzhou-based DeepSeek, the platform offers advanced reasoning and artificial intelligence capabilities. The app, powered by the open-source DeepSeek-V3 model, was launched on January 20 and was developed in just two months by a team of 200 people. DeepSeek claims to have developed its AI model with an investment of under $6 million, significantly less than the funds spent by leading US tech giants. The rapid rise of DeepSeek has sparked concern among Silicon Valley competitors about China's advancements in AI technology and is causing a market rout, with shares of AI-focused companies experiencing volatility.
