VisitChina Protests as Australian, New Zealand, and Japanese Warships Sail Through Taiwan Strait for First Time
Sep 26, 2024, 10:10 AM
Australia and New Zealand navy vessels sailed through the Taiwan Strait on Wednesday, according to New Zealand's Defence Minister. This transit was accompanied by a Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force (MSDF) vessel, marking the first time an MSDF ship has passed through the strait. China's Foreign Ministry has expressed strong opposition to these actions, with spokesperson Lin Jian stating that China has protested to Japan and urged it to refrain from disrupting cross-strait stability. China remains highly vigilant and monitors all foreign warships transiting the Taiwan Strait in accordance with its laws and regulations. The People's Liberation Army (PLA) monitored the transit of the Australian, New Zealand, and Japanese warships, which experts have described as a political stunt. Prime Minister Fumio Kishida's decision to send the MSDF vessel through the strait reflects a shift in Japan's approach amidst China's recent provocations. China's Foreign Ministry emphasized that the Taiwan question is a red line that must not be crossed and urged Japan to be prudent to maintain peace.
