China has expressed deep condolences over the death of former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, who passed away at the age of 100. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning conveyed these sentiments, highlighting Carter's role as a key promoter and decision-maker in the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the United States. President Xi Jinping also extended his condolences to U.S. President Joe Biden, acknowledging Carter's long-standing contributions to the development of bilateral relations and friendly exchanges between the two nations. Carter's presidency, from 1977 to 1981, saw the formal establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries in January 1979.
