China launched its first Type 076 new-generation amphibious assault ship, the Sichuan, in Shanghai on December 27, 2024. The vessel, named after Sichuan Province, has a hull number of 51 and boasts a full-load displacement of over 40,000 tonnes. It features a dual-island superstructure and a full-length flight deck, equipped with advanced technologies such as an electromagnetic catapult and arresting gear. The ship is designed to carry fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters, and amphibious landing craft, enhancing the capabilities of the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) in amphibious operations. The launch marks a notable advancement in China's naval development and showcases its independent research and development capabilities.
